Dreams of Ice and Iron was the very first one that I read from Kayla Edwards, and I am very pleased with her writing style. I loved everything in this book and how complex Edwards’ world-building is. This is the first installment in her Ice & Iron Series. I have to admit that at the beginning I was quite lost with the great number of names and places described, but I did love having different POVs and understanding the story from them. I’m not usually a person who loves reading from too many characters but I have to admit that in this book, it felt very natural and adequate. Every character brought something new and essential to the story and I cannot wait to read more about them. Moreover, I have been dealing with a very bad reading slump, and reading this book has helped quite a bit.

The first character that I want to talk about is Avalon. I hate how sometimes kind characters can be overlooked and infantilised, but Edwards completely changed this idea with her. Avalon is caring and selfless but that makes her so courageous and strong-minded. I wish we got more scenes in which she took that strength and fought more; but I am sure we will get to see this kind of character development in the next books. I am really excited to see her journey and read how she evolves and progresses. On the other hand, we must talk about Hadrian. I am not a huge fan of friends to lovers but god I loved these two! And I’m usually not a cheesy person or overromantic, but let me tell you, I loved their relationship and how they evolve through the first book.
Another character that I loved was Sable. I have a soft spot for badass women with fire powers. Besides, she fights like a pro and saved Avalon and Hadrian more times than any of them would like to admit… that while being trapped in a mask; I really cannot imagine what she’ll do now that she’s out. I also loved her relationship with Killian. For once, siblings aren’t competing but helping each other out and trying to achieve each other’s highest potential.
Nocturne’s point of view was really interesting. At first, I was very skeptical and indifferent to her story but as the book progressed, I became more involved with her plot. Besides, I love her strong character and how powerful and resolute she can be. I cannot wait to see more of her in Gods of Greed and Gold – the 2nd book in the series, and see how her relationship with Kit evolves.
If I were to point out something that I didn’t like too much, it would be the number of changes in places. It put me a little bit off how fast they would get to one place or the other, I would have liked to know more about the journey or see them struggle a little bit more. Besides, I feel like the mission was accomplished a little too fast or easily, I would have loved to see them face the problems more deeply.
To sum up, I have loved Edwards’ writing style a LOT. I really truly cannot wait to read something else from her. If you love Fae, werewolves, and mysterious curses, this is your book!
